Summer Travel Tips for People with Hearing Aids

Traveling with hearing aids can be easy if you are well prepared !! Yes, making reservations, understanding public announcements, and using the telephone can be difficult, but with these suggestions, your travels will be relaxing and more enjoyable:

  • Get a preventative hearing aid tune-up at Shea Hearing Aid Center prior to your trip
  • Be sure to carry extra batteries.
  • Extra tubing, soft domes, audio shoe, sports clip, or other attachable accessories
  • Pack a dri-aid kit or other dehumidifier to protect your hearing aids. A dry aid kit is a small jar that contains a desiccant to remove all moisture.
  • Consider carrying a spare set of aids, just in case.
  • All necessary cleaning equipment
  • A cell phone you know is compatible with your hearing aids

Making Reservations

  • Repeat the information so the agent can confirm the details.
  • If necessary, let the reservation agent know you have a hearing loss.
  • Ask for email or text confirmations.
  • If you are flying, you should consider opting to receive flight alerts and changes via text message or email.
  • Hearing aids and cochlear implants will not interfere with a plane’s navigation system so you can keep them on for the entire flight, including take-off and landing.

Public announcements

  • Public announcements can be difficult to understand.
  • Look for the video screens that post information on gates and departure times.
  • If you’re concerned about hearing announcements, let the agent at the boarding gate know you have a hearing loss.

Hope these tips can keep your travel stress-free and your hearing aids well-maintained. Safe travels and happy summer from Shea Clinic Team.
