Can Ginkgo Biloba Help Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound within the human ear when no actual sound is present. Tinnitus is not a disease, but a condition that is often the result of a wide range of underlying causes such as medications, or a circulatory system disorder. While sometimes this can contribute to, or cause the perception of ringing in the ears, the majority of the time, tinnitus is associated with hearing loss. However, the cause of tinnitus is only partially understood and quite complex, because the source of tinnitus appears to be the substitution of lost sound information to the brain.

But there is hope! A dietary supplement called Ginkgo biloba has become popular for its use in improving memory and cognition. It is also believed to increase blood flow in the inner ear, and protect against oxidative stress and improve energy metabolism. Because Ginkgo biloba is a plant extract, not all formulations of Ginkgo biloba have shown the same results in the treatment of tinnitus. Ginkgo biloba special extract EGb 761® may have more benefits than other formulations that have been investigated.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about Ginkgo biloba for the treatment of tinnitus, the professionals at the Shea Clinic Ear Nose & Throat have the experience, expertise, and tools to help you.
