J. Gregory Staffel, M.D.
After his fellowship, Dr. Staffel was immediately offered numerous academic positions throughout the country. He accepted an assistant professorship at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Although Dr. Staffel was now teaching specialists about nasal and facial plastic surgery, he knew he was actually just at the threshold of learning the finest points of his craft. During the first eighteen months of his academic career he had the privilege of visiting and spending time with the five best nasal plastic surgeons in the world. Most of these surgeons had spent their whole life perfecting their own techniques. They were instrumental in helping Dr. Staffel move to the highest level of surgery. Indeed Dr. Staffel is fond of saying that these visits advanced his career 20 years in 18 short months, and he holds a special debt of gratitude to each of the surgeons who so generously shared their time and talent with him.
Knowing that most doctors would never have the ability to do what he had already done, he decided the best way to help patients around the world would be to share what he had already learned from the masters with the younger surgeons coming along in training. He therefore wrote a book entitled Basic Principles of Rhinoplasty , which was endorsed by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is distributed through an educational grant to every ear, nose, and throat resident (doctor in training) in the country.
Dr. Staffel's passion for teaching propelled his academic career at the university. In addition to his first book about rhinoplasty, he also wrote Primary Care Otolaryngology . This book has enjoyed great success and is currently being considered for distribution to every medical student in the country.
Besides his two books, Dr. Staffel also has written numerous medical articles and co-directed a facial plastic fellowship for three years. (A fellowship is when doctors who are already board certified want to take even more additional training). Each of the graduates of the fellowship program has gone on to become chief of the division of facial plastic surgery at a major teaching program.
Dr. Staffel's love of teaching and clinical excellence resulted in his being promoted to Associate Professor while at the university. He also won numerous teaching awards from the medical students. Though he has moved into private practice, he continues to teach and lecture on a national basis. He is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology, American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
